Dog Heath & Winter Weather

Dog Health & Winter Weather

Winter is well and truly with us and we need to look out for our dogs & pets during this time.

There are many ways in which we can keep and eye on our dogs during this time.

* Your dogs coat and diet may change just like you and I.  Their winter coat should appear and may require more brushing and tending than normal.  Their diet needs may chance also and you might find that your dog eats more of a certain food during this time.  We all know dogs love to eat but be away of their needs and requirements and help ensure a balance and healthy diet.

* Exercise and walks may be disrupted by rain and snow.  Many dogs are happy and enjoy running outside in winter, but some dogs do require that extra helping hand.  A waterproof dog coat for those wet, snowy days is ideal and widely available from Barking Mad Clothing is ideal and for those cold winter nights a dog jumper and sweater is ideal.  Even the bigger dogs may require a little extra help during the winter months.  All dog owners need to be aware of safety when walking your dog.  Often in winter there are dull foggy damp days when visibility is poor.  We have available some great lightweight and fleece lined hi vis / safety dog coats available for all dog breeds.  Please keep your dog safe and on a lead if near a frozen lake or pond.  Even the most well behaved dog can find the frozen pond / lake attractive.

* If dog walking in the snow there may be salt on the roads and paths.  This can be very uncomfortable for dogs.  Don't forget to wash your dogs feet once home from the walk and wash away any salt that could irritate your dogs pads and feet.

* If you have any further tips for looking after your dog during the winter period we would love to hear from you

Pet Insurance

Pet Insurance the Pros & Cons

As pet owners I am sure you are aware of the importance of #pet insurance, if not a large bank account to cover all costs of keeping our four legged friends fit and healthy (other animals too).

So how do we choose a 'good' insurance company from a 'bad' insurance company and what is covered and for how long?  Do we have multi cover and save money or will this cost money in the long run? So many questions to ask and be answered.

I came across this pet blog which i hope you find useful.  It compares many pet insurance companies, most of which offer life time cover.  We would love to know what you think and maybe some personal stories of companies or perhaps some recommendations.

Firewoks & Your Pets

Fireworks & Your Pets

This time of year the fireworks and celebration season is upon us. Many of us have pets and worry about their safety at this time of year.  We have a few simple steps that might helps keep your pets secure and safe during this time.

1. Try and keep your pets indoors away from fireworks, loud bangs and bonfires.
2. Try and walk your #dog before dark.
3. Try and ensure your #cat is at home and all your outdoor pets are safe and secure.
4. If you can be at home during this time to keep your pets company we are sure they would appreciate the comfort and security at home.
5.  Let your #pet feel comfortable at home and let them choose where they feel comfortable.
6. Perhaps a little distraction during this time would help, ie perhaps a treat toy or perhaps a  cat nip toy.
 7. If your pets are still finding the hole 'fireworks experience' distressing it might be worth a quick visit to the vets as we are sure they will be able to assist with either light medication or perhaps calming techniques which will help reassure your animals.

We hope your find these practical tips useful and if you have any further comments we would love to hear from you and please feel free to leave a comment.

Dog Training

Confessions of a dog Trainer

Thank you to K9 Magazine and the author Nick Honor for their insights and informative article on dog training below...

"... Nick Honor, a professional canine trainer at The Behaviour Company and the PuppyStars Puppy Training Academy, took time out of his busy training schedule to confess all!
Nick has been a training professionally for three years, but with his own dogs for 20 years.
The most common errors dog owners make…
Timing errors when rewarding are very common, generally owners are far too slow with the reward. The other common error is unrealistic expectations. Owners expect too much too quickly when training, taking too large a step rather than building up slowly.
For example they teach the dog a recall in the kitchen or class environment, and then take them straight to the woods full of scent and exciting things and expect the dog to come back for nothing more than a pat on the head, strangely and more often than not, it does not return when called!

Those dreaded words…
I think the words I dread hearing most from clients are “I have seen several other trainers and it did not work!” Followed by “How long will it take to fix?!”

"... Handing difficult situations…
The most difficult dog and owner combination I have ever worked with was a German Shepherd dog suffering from extreme anxiety. The dog had been a rescued and was not a good match for the owner; they were not physically capable of managing the dog, they were incredibly hard to coach and they would not follow any of the plans or advice that I or their vet had given them.
After coaching, the owner would follow the plan for a short period and then start searching the internet looking for quick fixes and then find excuses why the dog was not improving rather than working with the plan and the medical advice. I stayed working with this owner for many months determined to help or at least improve things for the dog. After many months, several visits, dozens of emails and phone calls, the owner finally decided that the dog was beyond help and gave up. I actually put this down as a failure on my part, and my least proud career moment, but I learned a great deal from this experience.

Dogs make the best trainers…
We see lots of fun moments but the stand out memory of the funniest thing I’ve seen is when I saw a Bichon owner hand feeding their dog its meal from a tea spoon and the dog, according to the owner, would only eat rice and duck pate and only from a spoon. I know that dogs are the best human trainers, but this one was the undisputed master!

Career highs…
I’ve had many proud moments over the years, in fact every time I help an owner and prevent a dog from being rehomed, or worst case scenario, put to sleep, I feel very immensely proud. I also volunteer as a fund raiser for the Medical Detection Dogs and I am incredibly proud to be part of this organisation.

Thinking of becoming a dog trainer?
The best piece of advice I could give to anyone thinking about becoming a dog trainer is to learn from others. Find a good training provider that uses and promotes modern reward based, force-free training methods..."

Dangerous Dogs Bill

Guide Dogs Get the protection they Deserve

Thank you to http://www.guidedogs.org.uk for their article on the New developments on the Dangerous Dogs Bill, well done...

"9 Apr 2013
The Government has today announced plans to change the law to treat attacks on guide dogs more seriously, thanks in no small part to the hard work of our campaigners.

In another success for our dog attacks campaign, attacks on guide dogs and other assistance dogs will be explicitly covered by dangerous dogs legislation for the first time.

Under plans announced in the draft Dangerous Dogs (Amendment) Bill the owner, or person in charge, of a dog that attacks an assistance dog can be prosecuted.

Guide Dogs Chief Executive Richard Leaman said: "Guide Dogs welcomes any measures that will treat attacks on guide dogs more seriously. On average, eight guide dogs are attacked by other dogs every month. There must be better protection for guide and other assistance dogs and irresponsible dog owners must be held to account."

The news comes after a committee of MPs recommended in February that an attack on a guide dog should be treated as an aggravated attack on its owner.

It was also announced earlier this year that all dogs in England must be microchipped from April 2016.

Why not sign up to become a Guide Dogs campaigner and help us in future!"

Has Dog Meat made its way into the food chain?

Has Dog Meat Made its way into our food chain?

What an interesting article by the mail online and K9 Magazine...

"Has DOG meat been found in our food? New takeaway horror after experts discover 'mystery meat' in a lamb curry
  • Samples of curries and kebabs from six outlets in London were tested
  • The meat in a lamb curry could not be identified as common animal source
  • One burger contained no beef at all other than blood and heart
  • Beef in another dish was found to contain chicken material including blood... "
"...  A mystery meat, which has defied the best efforts of scientists to identify it, has been found in a lamb curry as part of an investigation into food fraud. The discovery raises new questions about just what is going into the nation’s takeaways and processed foods.  A BBC documentary to be aired on BBC3 tonight sent samples of curries and kebabs bought from six outlets in London for laboratory tests..."

The meat in a Beef in Black Bean Sauce dish turned out to contain high levels of chicken material including blood, while a burger contained no beef at all, other than blood and heart.

However, most alarming of all was a curry. A spokesman for the programme said: ‘Just when we thought things couldn't get any worse, the results came in for an Indian Lamb Curry.
‘It did contain meat, but that meat was not lamb, not pork, nor was it chicken or beef. Not horse, and not goat either.’
Worry: A burger that was tested contained no beef at all, other than blood and heart
Worry: A burger that was tested contained no beef at all, other than blood and heart
All of the many tests to date by the lab used by the programme have failed to identify exactly which animal was the source of the meat.
The revelation raises many grim possibilities. There is evidence from Spain, for example, of meat from dog carcasses being processed for use in pet food.
This is not the first time that a question mark has been put over the content of the take-out dishes eaten by millions of Britons every day.
Just last year, a survey of 20 lamb curries in the West Midlands found all had been bulked up with cheaper beef, pork and chicken.
Amazingly, four contained no lamb at all, rather the outlets used either beef or chicken which was hidden beneath a powerful and spicy sauce.
At the same time, a meat cutting plant in Wales has been accused of supplying horsemeat from an abattoir in Yorkshire to companies making kebabs and burgers for hundreds of independent take-aways.
The discovery of horsemeat in big brand products sold by supermarkets like Tesco and Asda, together with chains like Burger King and big brands from Birds Eye to Findus, has changed the nation’s shopping habits. The implication of take-out curries in food fraud could also hit the industry hard.

Socail Media Dog Attack goes Viral

"Social media search for Biddenham dog's attacker goes viral"

 bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-21828335
bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-21828335

" A Bedfordshire woman, who put pictures on social media of her spaniel being savaged by a dog resembling a pitbull, says she was "surprised" to get over 10,000 shares.

Mafalda Clewlow, from Biddenham, posted images of the "ferocious attack" on her King Charles Spaniel, as they walked near Ouse Valley golf course on Friday.

Ms Clewlow said the dog was badly hurt but was recovering well.

Police have released a photograph of a man they suspect to be the dog's owner.

They have appealed for information from the public to identify him.

Ms Clewlow, 40, said the attack happened as she was walking her two-year-old dog, Spot, on a public footpath, used by many other dog walkers.

"This dog came running, and within a few seconds, it launched a ferocious attack [on Spot]," she said.

Police are trying to trace the man they believe to be the owner of the dog

"It had no lead and no collar, it was totally on the loose."

She said the offending dog's owner tried to grab it but it had "locked" onto Spot with its teeth.

The mother-of-two said she also tried to separate them and had got bitten, before two passers-by helped pull the dogs apart.

"If it wasn't for them I think my dog would probably be dead," she added.

Spot sustained bite wounds on his legs and back area but Ms Clewlow said he was "magically recovering well".

Ms Clewlow took photographs of the attack and posted them on Facebook.

"I obviously wasn't prepared for the way it has gone viral, all I wanted to do was warn local dog owners, because I am worried about going out again while this dog is still around," she said.

A spokeswoman for Bedfordshire police said the incident was being investigated "

Thank you to the BBC for the above comments and pictures / links

What do you think?  Should dogs be kept on leads in a public place?

Obese Pets / Dogs

Obese Pets / Dogs

According to recent stats poor diet has placed more than 18 million pets in the UK at risk of early death.

PDSA nurse Danielle Toorish with Rico Livingstone, a 6-year-old Rottweiler who weighs 58.5kg Credit: Malcolm Cochrane/PDSA/PA Wire

"Elaine Pendlebury, PDSA senior veterinary surgeon, said pet obesity causes "daily misery for millions of pets." She added, "vet practices across the UK see the consequences of pet obesity every single day such as obese dogs unable to enjoy regular walks due to exhaustion, fat cats that can't jump or play, and rabbits so hopelessly overweight they can't clean themselves properly."

"A report of nearly 4,000 dog, cat and rabbit owners has found that 13.5 million animals are "treated" to fatty or sugary treats and junk food.
  • Nearly half of owners "treat" their pets because they believe it makes the animal feel happy
  • Some 29 per cent of owners do so because it makes them happy
  • More than 60 per cent of owners think severely overweight pets should be removed from someone who persistently ignores veterinary advice
  • Over half of owners believe overweight people are more likely to have fat pets
